Schools often reflect the larger, and sometimes polarized, national conversation. As elections approach, it’s crucial that students learn how to respectfully engage in discussions about politically charged topics. Students need to feel safe expressing their opinions and viewpoints, while knowing their school environment remains supportive and inclusive.

School counselors play a key role in helping students develop the skills to navigate these complex conversations. They teach students to engage thoughtfully and respectfully, even when opinions differ. With their specialized training, counselors promote positive student development, guiding them in building effective communication, empathy, self-discipline, and social maturity.

Of course, educators, families, and community members play a big part too. As role models, they can show students what civil engagement looks like and encourage open, respectful dialogue. By working together to equip kids with the tools to manage emotionally charged situations, we can ensure that each and every student feels heard, respected, and ready to engage in positive, meaningful ways.
